The Start-by-Start PitchFX Tool

The Start-by-Start PitchFX Tool is the most comprehensive PitchFX tool on the web for analyzing pitchers on a game-by-game basis. The tool can be found here.

To start, select a date, then select a game, then select any pitcher. The data is hosted and produced by MLB and Sportsvision, so if there's a problem with the data, I probably don't have anything to do with it. On the other hand, the Sportvision system is fantastic, and is clearly the best thing out there for getting a comprehensive look at a pitcher's performance on any given night. This tool can access data from almost any pitcher during any game, although sometimes the Sportsvision operator goes to get a hot-dog.

This tool was original written to help a few technologically challenged friends reconstruct pitching performances. As such, I am always willing to tailor things to your needs. If you'd love to see a specific type of analysis, plot, or correction, let me know and I'll try to accomodate.

Filtering

Data can be filtered using a number of options. You can select (or de-select) innings shown in the graphs - this can be useful for starting pitchers. Just underneath the innings selector is a drop-down box that you can use to change the graphs to show either Pitch-Types or an Extra-Detailed plots that show more detailed results of each pitch. Please note that the Pitch-Types are currently determined by the MLB software and are known to have some problems.

Just next to the Plot-Type selector is a drop-down box that will allow you to select Righty/Lefty splits. This can give you a better appreciation for the different types of pitches that a pitcher might throw to RH or LH Hitters.

More Information

There are a number of resources around the web for understanding the mechanics of the PitchFX system and how to interpret the data. I have written a short Wiki that helps to explain some of the analysis, but more in-depth explanations for the serious Sabermetrician can be found at Mike Fast, Alan Nathan or Josh Kalk's website.
