Paul Byrd

Boston Red Sox

Pitch Repertoire At-A-Glance

Although they have not thrown an MLB pitch in 2024, Paul Byrd threw 4,236 pitches that were tracked by the PITCHf/x system between 2007 and 2009, all of them occuring in the MLB Regular Season. In 2009, they relied primarily on their Fourseam Fastball (86mph) and Slider (80mph), also mixing in a Change (80mph) and Curve (75mph). He also rarely threw a Sinker (86mph).

In 2009, compared to other RHP:
Their fourseam fastball comes in below hitting speed, has heavy sinking action, is basically never swung at and missed compared to other pitchers' fourseamers and has much less armside movement than typical. Their slider comes in below hitting speed, is basically never swung at and missed compared to other pitchers' sliders and has short glove-side cut. Their change has below average velo, generates fewer whiffs/swing compared to other pitchers' changeups, results in more flyballs compared to other pitchers' changeups and has a lot of backspin. Their curve is basically never swung at and missed compared to other pitchers' curves, has sweeping glove-side movement, results in more flyballs compared to other pitchers' curves, has little depth and has slightly below average velo. Their sinker is so slow that it is substantially gravitational, has surprisingly little armside run, generates fewer whiffs/swing compared to other pitchers' sinkers, results in more flyballs compared to other pitchers' sinkers and has some natural sinking action.
