Adam Wainwright

St. Louis Cardinals

Pitch Repertoire At-A-Glance

Although they have not thrown an MLB pitch in 2024, Adam Wainwright threw 40,159 pitches that were tracked by the PITCHf/x system between 2007 and 2023, including pitches thrown in the MLB Regular Season, the MLB Postseason, The World Baseball Classic and Spring Training. In 2023, they relied primarily on their Sinker (87mph), Curve (72mph) and Cutter (83mph), also mixing in a Fourseam Fastball (86mph). He also rarely threw a Change (80mph), Splitter (83mph), Slider (76mph) and Slow Curve (63mph).

In 2023, compared to other RHP:
Their sinker is so slow that it is substantially gravitational and results in somewhat more flyballs compared to other pitchers' sinkers. Their curve has an exceptional bite, comes in below hitting speed, has sweeping glove-side movement, generates fewer whiffs/swing compared to other pitchers' curves and results in somewhat more flyballs compared to other pitchers' curves. Their cutter comes in below hitting speed, has extreme cut action and has some natural sink. Their fourseam fastball comes in below hitting speed, has much less armside movement than typical, generates fewer whiffs/swing compared to other pitchers' fourseamers and has some natural sinking action. Their change is basically never swung at and missed compared to other pitchers' changeups, has below average velo and has slight armside fade. Their splitter is basically never swung at and missed compared to other pitchers' splitters, results in somewhat more flyballs compared to other pitchers' splitters, has slight armside fade and has slightly below average velo. Their slider (take this with a grain of salt because they've only thrown 4 of them in 2023) comes in below hitting speed, is basically never swung at and missed compared to other pitchers' sliders, sweeps across the zone, has exceptional depth and is an extreme flyball pitch compared to other pitchers' sliders. Their slow curve (take this with a grain of salt because they've only thrown 1 of them in 2023) is a real yakker that's separated from their other curveball due to its big drop and slow speed.
