Pitch Repertoire At-A-Glance

Although they have not thrown an MLB pitch in 2024, Mike Mussina threw 3,639 pitches that were tracked by the PITCHf/x system between 2007 and 2008, all of them occuring in the MLB Regular Season. In 2008, they relied primarily on their Sinker (87mph) and Cutter (82mph), also mixing in a Curve (77mph), Fourseam Fastball (87mph), Slow Curve (69mph) and Change (70mph).

In 2008, compared to other RHP:
Their sinker is so slow that it is substantially gravitational, generates fewer whiffs/swing compared to other pitchers' sinkers and results in somewhat more flyballs compared to other pitchers' sinkers. Their cutter comes in below hitting speed, has heavy sink, has extreme cut action and results in many more groundballs compared to other pitchers' cutters. Their curve is basically never swung at and missed compared to other pitchers' curves, has a sharp downward bite and results in somewhat more groundballs compared to other pitchers' curves. Their fourseam fastball comes in below hitting speed, generates fewer whiffs/swing compared to other pitchers' fourseamers and has slightly less natural movement than typical. Their slow curve is a real yakker that's separated from their other curveball due to its big drop and slow speed. Their change comes in below hitting speed, has surprising cut action and results in somewhat more flyballs compared to other pitchers' changeups.
