Pitch Repertoire At-A-Glance

Although they have not thrown an MLB pitch in 2024, Brandon Backe threw 3,264 pitches that were tracked by the PITCHf/x system between 2007 and 2009, all of them occuring in the MLB Regular Season. In 2009, they relied primarily on their Sinker (90mph) and Fourseam Fastball (89mph), also mixing in a Slider (82mph), Curve (75mph) and Change (83mph).

In 2009, compared to other RHP:
Their sinker generates fewer whiffs/swing compared to other pitchers' sinkers, results in more flyballs compared to other pitchers' sinkers, has less armside run than typical and has slightly below average velo. Their fourseam fastball comes in below hitting speed, generates more whiffs/swing compared to other pitchers' fourseamers, has less armside movement than typical and has some natural sinking action. Their slider results in more flyballs compared to other pitchers' sliders and has some two-plane movement. Their curve is basically never swung at and missed compared to other pitchers' curves, has a sharp downward bite, results in somewhat more flyballs compared to other pitchers' curves and has slightly below average velo. Their change (take this with a grain of salt because they've only thrown 16 of them in 2009) is basically never swung at and missed compared to other pitchers' changeups, has surprising cut action, dives down out of the zone and results in more flyballs compared to other pitchers' changeups.
